Subject: Making Clothes
I was wondering if anyone here makes their own clothes?  I was looking at a couple of patterns for clothes and was wondering how they would look adjusted a bit for wearing a corset under.

I also found this:

and thought if I could find more like this maybe I shouldn't consider taking the time to make my own.

It depends really on what the pattern is and how you want to adjust it.

So far I have only adjusted my clothes for my corsets, with the exception of the dress I wore for my avatar picture - but that is stretchy fabric, a bit easier to make it fit over a corset! ;-)

If I were to make something (non-elastic) for wearing over a corset, starting from a pattern, I would begin by making it exactly to pattern spec, then alter it according to what I note when wearing the stock garment over my corset - two easy steps (following the pattern, then altering) instead of guessing what to alter in the pattern before making the garment. Then I can compare the altered garment to the pattern, and note where the changes were made. Do that a few times, and you'll get enough experience to start altering the pattern directly because you'll be familiar with what needs to be changed.

That is a good idea to make then adjust.  I was thinking of going off of my corseted measurements and then tweaking where I need after it is done but I am not sure that would work.  (Always can take away but you can't add.) :)

Hi,

I sew some clothes myself mostly skirts  but I also draft some of the pattern myself especially skirts.
Ready made clothes or pattern is so very far from my bodyshape.

I would suggest start with measuring yourself and compare to the patterns measurements.
Now you alter the pattern and make a test garment a mock up in some inexpensive fabric first and see how it fits and if you need to make more changes. After this you can start cutting the real fabric using the altered pattern.

How true! The last time clothes were made for body shapes such as ours was fifty years ago! Or a hundred... And such beautiful clothes! Elegance and style that one doesn't see much of any more.

Yes I agree, what beautiful clothes!  If only we could get away with wearing some of those extravagant dresses today, NOT on Halloween, without getting some raised eyebrows and people questioning our sanity.

One day, my husband and I are planning to renew our wedding vows and you better believe I am going to try my best to try and recreate one of those beautiful dresses.  :)  The only problem there is, is that I think it might be beyond my sewing skill and I know I will not have enough money to have someone else make it for me.  :)  So I guess when that time comes we shall see.

For now I was looking at patterns of dresses and skirt/shirts that are causal enough for everyday wear.  I am thinking that maybe I should look at the selection of dresses and skirts out there on racks at the store because I wouldn’t probably need to do incredibly large adjustments to them at this stage of my w. training.  Hummm I guess this is a whole other task:  finding comfortable suitable clothes.

Ha, there is one of my projects that I am very actively studying and analyzing with a firm intention of making it come true in the short to medium term - a 1870s to 1890s period dress. I too, had doubts some time ago about being able to make that myself, but as time passes, and as my mind works on it, as my hands and eyes become surer with experience, it is becoming obvious that it is not all that difficult. I have greatly reduced the complexity by breaking the project down into parts - a logical premise since those dresses have several components. And I have found some patterns from that era, on the Internet, in places like marquise.de and such. Some are more or less legible, others are more easily interpreted. It will be a challenge, but the pleasure of making it with my own hands, combined with the effort of making the dress, will make me appreciate it that much more once it's done.

The time when I will start working on this is approaching fast, because the waist size I am aiming for is getting closer, within reach. I may start it sooner, even if I haven't reached my target size (20 inches, or less, if possible, but I will place no bets as to the final girth or the time it will take - lessons learned!), and alter it as my corsets get tighter with time.

This site has a lot of useful information and pattern etc. for viktorian clothes. I think the smallest waistsize on this pattern is 24 inches. I wish they made the patterns to fit a smaller waist also. This is clothes you should wear a corset under to get the right shape and fit.

This for me is the biggest problem my wardrobe problems. I can not find clothes and not suitable patterns either.
For example sites who sells corsets down to 18 inches only offers skirts and dresses in normal clothes sizes and not made to fit over or under such small waist so this means the smallest waist size is about 24 inches and I guess in reality even bigger as it is added ease to the clothes this to my knowledge at least.
It is more and more places who sells corsets and people who make them but no one seems to make suitable clothes fitting over a corseted waist  for a reasonable price (they still goes by normal clothes sizes).

Patterns of fashion by Janet Arnold is a good series of books to look at if you're intrested in period dress.

Thanks for the links! They should provide me with more sources of inspiration.  :-)  ;-)

Bernina just came out with a program called MyLabel. You put in your messurments and it spits out a pattern to the messurments you put in. Also you can alter the patterns that they offer in the program. I have heard (since I dont have the program) that some women have altered a tank top into a wedding dress. Dont ask me how its done but it is. The fabric store that I go to does up displays using it all the time. http://www.berninamylabel.com/ they also have a demo of the program if anyone is interested. It creats a 3d model of the measurments you put in.

I downloaded the free version and started with giving my height and a few other things and under girth I tried to go down to my waist size but could not. The lowest waist size this free demo program allowed was 58 cm (about 23 inches). No idea if this is the same on the version you have to buy. I would be interested to hear if someone has tried any of this programs and how they work if you have a very small waist compared to hips.

Some year ago it was some women who worked on a new program and she wrote she was working on getting the program to work for people who wears a corset and has a big diffrence between waist and hip etc. Well I have not heard anything more about the program and not seen it out in the market. Now I can not remember the name of it but is it anyone here who has heard about such program?

I have not tried this system but I have used the drafting instruction for the skirt.

I called to check (since I dont have the software myself) and it doesnt seem to go beyond what you said. However since it just recently came out (as in the beginning of this year) they are most likely going to come out with upgrades that being said there is a chance in the future it will go down to your size you might have to use a childs measurment for that however. I hope that helped some.

It seems like a very neat program and I look forward to downloading the free sample and give it a try too.  Unfortunately I have to wait until I go to a wy-fi place with a better Internet connection so that it doesn't take 5 hours to download on snail slow dial up.  :) Yes folks I did say FIVE hours.  Living in the sticks sometimes does not have its benefits.

Thank you Morgaine for posting it.
