The soft bits will slump down to their original (or almost) position and the ribs will reexpand. It is inevitable. Our bodies are flexible and elastic, not rigid. Anything flexible and elastic that is taken out of its natural shape, once released, will return to its original shape. In less than a week, most is lost.
Any woman, including me, can get the same shape as the Bettie Page picture without wearing corsets just by posture. Bend forward at the hips, bring the chest up by arching the back, and that cavity under the ribs appears by magic.
And by reading the "Toleration" article, I see that the good doctor seems to be just looking for excuses to rant against corsets. His obsession for the "deformities" demonstrates his bias against corsets and tightlacing. And some of his illustrations prove that the reshaping effects are not permanent.
So far, tightlacing has only done me good. I don't wear my corset to work, but I am working on a discreet solution that will reduce the effects of not being tightlaced.
Jenny.
