Subject: Corsets in warm weather
Does anyone have any advice for wearing your corset during the warm weather?  I wear a summer corset from wasp creations--the corset breathes well, but the corset liner i wear under it does not.  I know sweat is not good for a corset so I don't like to wear it without the liner.  Is there a way I can still wear my corset during the summer, but not worry about passing out in the heat?

What are your liners made of?
I've seem them in lycra (swimsuit material) or cotton knit (t-shirt cloth).

You can wear a tight t- shirt from which the upper part and arms are deleted

Kind regards

T-shirts usually have 2 seams down the sides that can cause problems.

It's better to stitch up a tube of t-shirt fabric with a single seam that you can position along your spine in the lacing gap.

Hi,
Cotton  is not a good material under the corset. Cotton traps bodyheat and holds moisture under the corset.  A good corset liner has either one seam in the middle of the back or buy totally seamless tops and wear as a liner.

I have tried wearing undershirts with the sleeves and uppers cut off, but find that the sleeves and the bunching of the shirt under the corset irritate my skin.  So, has anyone found a liner that breathes better than lycra, and/or how do you get through really hot and humid summers while laced?  I know it will just take some getting used to, but any suggestions are welcome.  New York got so hot last summer that I had to give up my corset (fearing damage to the corset and myself from sweating, etc) until the weather cooled down again.  I'd rather be able to keep my shape year-round.

If you're not happy with Lycra, how about polypropylene? This is a material that is used as a first layer of clothing in the winter because it wicks moisture away from the skin rather than becoming damp like cotton.

So, no other choice than changing tight cotton tube seamless 3 times a day and drinking a lot to counterbalance the loss of water (sweating) and dry (refresh) the bust.
Proven experience in a hot summer in France with a tight plastic back brace worn 23/7

Have a try

Best regards

This is some of the things I do when it is hot and I can not just remove my corset for a cold shower.

If i know I must travel and it will be hot like in a bus or train for example. I put normal tapwater into a plastic bottle does not fill it up completely and leave it in the freezer for some hours so it is almost completely frozen. This water you can drink to cool down but also use the bottle at your neck etc to cool off your whole body. The icewater will slowly melt but will keep cold for rather long time.

I also use an old handfan it is a forgotten help when it is warm nowdays.

At home I rince a small towel with just a little water and put it in the freezer for some 15 minutes and this towel I can now wrap around my neck and it will cool off the body very fast this way.

If you do not have airco. in your home buy electric table fans they really help.

Lace less tight when it is very warm and be careful when you pull the laces if it is warm. If it is warm and I pull the laces it can feel like burnmarks on my body and also the body do swell a little in the heat so if you can not lace as tight as normal this is totally ok.

Of course drink a lot of water and eat a lot of fruit and extra salt the normal thing you should do when it is very hot and stay in the shadow maybe use a hat or parasol also depending if you dare or not.

This is how I do it and I have stayed laced during the whole summer but my waist I have allowed to be sligthly bigger but now when it is cooler again I do lace a little tighter again back to my normal tightness.

Some corsetmakers also offers a summercorset and it is simply a one layer corset. I have had one from wasp creation and it was just as sturdy as other corsets but a lot more comfortable to wear when it was hot. This corset was also easy to wash at home by hand.

Well this is mabye a little late here in Sweden it is already a little cooler but the summer is not yet over.

Hi,
I have always used a cotton liner, usually a tight cotton top but following your advice I decided to try Lycra. I bought a tight fitting leotard made from polyamide (Nylon) and Lycra and wore my corset over the top. At first I thought it was a real good idea as it was easier to lace the corset up; the laces slid more easily than with cotton underneath. HOWEVER! after a couple of hours when there was no way of removing the corset as I was travelling I got very hot and sticky. Any thoughts?

In 2007, I think we will see more corsets suitable for summer wear.

There also exists various devices/gadgets for keeping cool (some for military or police use). There do exist various cooling necklaces, that cools the blood going to he head. Don't have the information with me, though.

Annalai's advices are really good. Use them.

Liners without seams doesn't suit all figures, ie. figure with great difference between bust/hips and waist, because the fabric can wrinkle at the waist or be overstretched at the hips/bust area. Made to measure liners, with a seam down the back is (once again) good advice from her.

Just my 2 cents of opinion.

[ Tech Couture, Material, Tencel ]

In my research of traditional and modern technical fabrics I came across this material as a candidate for corset lining.

Here in the Sonoran Desert it is not unusual for me to spend long periods in temperatures between 100 to 120 so of course I have want to select a liner with superior qualities.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonoran_Desert

I have found a cellulose based fiber derived from wood pulp brand named "Tencel".

Tencel (Lyocell): ‘it is as fine as silk, as strong as polyester, as easy to care for as acrylic, cool and pleasant like linen, as warm as wool and absorbs more moisture than cotton.’ (quote from a customer)

This material is produced by an Austrian firm by the name of Lenzing AG.

Find below the link to their website.
The site can be viewed in both English and German.

http://www.tencel.com/fibers/en/textiles/303.jsp

Note: You may find the bulletin regarding a newly introduced (July 08, 2007) composite fabric that combines both Tencel and CoolMax technologies.

More information on this material at Wikipedia . . .
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lyocell

I have coined the term "Tech Couture" to describe the distinctive fusion of art and science that I and others engage in. This does not suggest there has ever been art that is not intrinsically encouraged by the advance of science. What I suggest is that there has never been a period when the spiritual impetus of design and the material realization that follows have been so dramatically empowered by the tools now included in the palette of the artist and artisan.
Every decision is a path.
